21st World Petroleum Congress

15 - 19 June, 2014, Moscow, Russia

On October 1-3, 2012, the regular meetings of the World Petroleum Council, which currently consists of 66 member countries, the Programme Committee of the 21st World Petroleum Congress (WPC), and the Executive Committee of the World Petroleum Council, will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The preparation for the Congress Technical Programme will pass its midpoint at the Programme Committee meeting. The Chairmen of the Congress Forums will be appointed at the meeting. This will enable the start of the “call for papers” process from all countries involved in the production, refining, and consumption of petroleum products. The Programme already reflects the most urgent topics concerning the development and improvement of the industry in the coming period. It includes work on the search for solutions to contemporary challenges associated, in particular, with the fact that the greater part of the global oil reserves growth occurs through the development of remote and capital intensive oil fields.

World Petroleum Congresses began in 1933. London was the host city of the first international forum for oil industry businessmen and scientists. Since then, this unique event has been held 20 times in different countries and on different continents.

The 21st WPC will be conducted in Moscow from the 15-19 June, 2014. It is expected to be the largest event in the history of the WPC. Certainly, one of the factors determining the distinctive significance of the 21st WPC is the host country: Russia has been and remains one of the largest producers of hydrocarbons in the world. Still, organizers of the Moscow Congress are applying extra effort to increase its representativeness and number of attendees. In particular, it has been decided that the plenary sessions’ presentations will be simultaneously translated into Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, German, French, and Russian.

The participants at the Congresses are traditionally quite prominent and include heads of governments and ministers, CEOs of the largest oil companies, financiers, investors, and leading scientists. The 20th WPC brought together approximately 5000 delegates, speakers, and 500 media representatives from 90 countries.

The International Programme Committee of the Congress has been working very actively.  The technical Programme of the Congress has already been formulated. It fully reflects the current conditions and prospects of the development of the global petroleum industry, defines issues relevant to global initiatives, and targets all aspects of the most complex branch of the global economy.

The WPC brand is one of the most prestigious in the global petroleum industry. Most of the world’s largest petroleum companies gladly accept the invitations to sponsor these events. In recent years, the number of sponsors of the WPCs has grown to 50 companies. Organizers of the 21st WPC are expecting to surpass this mark as well.  As of this point, the Russian oil companies Transneft and Zarubezhneft have already become sponsors of the upcoming Congress.
